Whey Protein Isolate and Whey Protein Concentrate
The majority of whey protein powders that we come across will consist mostly of whey protein concentrate with additional whey protein isolate added in. Second to this we will find pure whey protein concentrate and then the third most available form is whey protein isolate. The reason that whey protein isolate is less popular is not because it is a less effective supplement but because it is the most pure form of whey protein and therefore the most expensive. Whey protein isolate contains about 95-98% pure whey protein compared to whey protein concentrate which consists of 70-85% whey protein. The figures will vary a little depending on the product and manufacturer.
Whey protein isolate is the highest yield of any protein food source presently available. It scores an amazing 159 points on the BV chart. a chart designed to measure the % of protein that we actual digest from a food source therefore measuring its effectiveness at building muscle and other cells. At present there is nothing better than whey protein isolate. Whey protein concentrate takes second place at 104 points and eggs are third with a BV of 100.
However, once a protein food source gets up and above 100 on the BV chart it is not assured that the differences in score really make a huge difference at that point. The returns may be diminishing and there are athletes and body builders who say they have not noticed a big difference in their progress between using whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. So some feel that the difference is small and does not justify the elevated price of whey protein isolate; while others think it is worth it. There is still controversy about this subject!
The good news is that whey is definitely the prime muscle building protein food source around today, which ever type you choose! It is also good to know that there are even whey protein isolates that are 100% pure and contain no fat or lactose which is great for those with lactose intolerance.
