Stay Fit Without Spending A Dime: Do Push-Ups

Push-ups were made famous by many military movies. They are a very effective and important workout, because the need no machine nor dumbbell, no space and most of all they are completely free. Compare all these things to the result you can get with push-ups and it will clear why push-ups are the nest exercise to tone up the muscles of your upper body with little time and no money.
The muscles involved in push-ups are: pectorals, triceps and many muscles of the back. But push-ups are not only a killer back workout: with a little twist (which I will explain at the end of the article) they can also become a very good bicep workout.
First of all, remember that if your back or shoulder suffered from serious injuries in the past, you want to be careful with push-ups.
The correct way to do push-ups is well known: lie down on the floor, toes and knees on the ground, arms are straight. Lift the knees keeping your arms straight, then go down towards the floor keeping all your body in line.
It seems easy enough exercise to do, but it still may need some attention:

  • The back has to remain straight, bending it in either way means cheating
  • Look at the floor, not ahead. Head and neck have to be in line with the trunk
  • Keep the arms a little wider than the shoulders, and palms be parallel to the trunk

Following this principle, there can be many different types of push-ups. The wider the arms, the more difficult the exercise.
Now, let’s talk about a type of push-ups which are very effective for the biceps: diamond push-ups. With your hands open, join your indexes and your thumbs together forming a diamond (or a rhombus if you will). Do the push-ups with the hands in front of your chest. They are very difficult to do, so unless you have been doing normal push-ups for a while, don’t try them if you don’t want to smash your ego, because chances are that you won’t be able to complete even one.
