Protein Absorption After Working Out

You’ve probably seen how many places sell protein supplements today. Whether you’re looking at a fitness site online with ads for protein bars all over the sides or standing in line at the supermarket, considering picking up a premixed protein shake to tide you over until dinner, these supplements are impossible to avoid in most cities.

But what are the benefits of having easily-consumable protein in the first place? It isn’t just about convenience.

You probably know that it’s extremely important, when trying to build muscle, that you take in enough protein. But did you know that there’s only a short set amount of time that can pass between your exercise and the time of your protein consumption during which the nutrients will be effective in your body?

After working out, you only have about an hour’s time for your muscles to be in top absorptive condition. In fact, if you can take your protein within thirty minutes of your workout that’s much better. Your muscles are primed and ready for immediate protein, carbohydrate, and glucose absorption in this time period right after strenuous use, and it’s in the time period that you must provide them with those nutrients if you want to see the biggest, fastest gains in muscle mass.

Protein matter makes up the bulk of your muscles’ tissue, but carbohydrates and glucose (as well as water) are also completely necessary for them to get bigger. And these building blocks of muscle growth, if consumed directly after your strength-training workouts, will be twice as effective than they would be if you took them at any other time

Plus, if you work out without having enough protein that day, your body will begin to literally digest itself to get the protein it needs. What does that mean for your physique? A decrease in muscle mass, and often an increase in body-fat percentage — even if you’re losing weight in the process.
