Do You Really Need a Protein Supplement?
You’ve heard all the experts and read all of the weight loss tips and you’re finally convinced you should probably increase the amount of protein you have each day. But, you’re a fairly healthy person with who eats right most of the time and you’re not convinced you have to take protein supplements. If you just eat enough lean turkey and chicken along with some extra egg whites each morning, you can boost your protein intake to the recommended level. You may want to think that one through again.
In a typical serving of protein powder you’re going to get about 30 grams of isolated protein while only taking in about 1 gram of fat and little to no sugar. In order to get that same amount of protein with chicken, you’re going to have to eat about 3/4 of a breast and that’s going to give you about 6 or 7 grams of additional fat. Want to try doing the same things with egg whites? That’s going to mean you need to cook up at least 7 eggs.
That’s looking at things purely from a nutritional point of view. For most people, they would much rather enjoy a big glass of chocolate protein shake instead of a 7 egg-white omelet. Not to mention the convenience of mixing up your protein shake in a blender rather than heating up a pan, cracking some eggs, whisking them up and then cooking them. Oh, and don’t forget about clean up afterwards. It’s also much more convenient to take an extra 30 grams of protein supplement with you to work than it is to take the same thing in the form of eggs or chicken breast.
There are other options available for you if you get tired of having shakes. I always like to have a few boxes of protein bars in the cupboard for the moments when I need something in my stomach and I don’t want to hassle with mixing up a shake. These also work out very well when packing a healthy lunch for work.
As you can see, not only will a good protein supplement fit into you nutritional program much better, it will also fit into your lifestyle a lot easier. Yes, this does mean you’re going to be spending a bit of money on the protein each month, but great prices can be found online, with a little bit of searching. Set up a separate email address and get on as many mailing lists as you can. That way you’ll get notified whenever your favorite brand goes on sale.
